Children in our toddler classes are 2-years-old in the fall (by December 31st). Three teachers guide the classroom of up to 12 students. The classroom is supported by additional resource teachers throughout the week. There are two morning and two afternoon sections. Morning students attend three mornings per week for four hours per day; afternoon students meet three or four afternoons for three hours a day.
Interactive Play – Students choose from the various engaging learning centers in the room with the teachers facilitating their play. Centers may include a dramatic play area with dress-up and a kitchen area; art activities including easel painting, colored pencils and crayons or other materials or medium; the block area; sand or water table; playdough, puzzles and other manipulatives; and a writing center. A science center offers exploration with magnets, magnifying glasses and seasonal objects.
Story Time and Meeting – Story time happens in small groups at the beginning of the year using books, flannel boards and puppets. Later on in the school year, this naturally evolves into short all-group meetings for stories, songs and movement as the children become able to participate.
Self-Responsibility – Children take part in cleaning up their play areas and helping set the table for snack time. They learn other self-help skills including toileting, hand washing, clearing their snack when finished, and packing their totes to go home.
Enrichment – Students transition once per week to Music, Sensory Play and Science/Nature classes and are supported by the Studio Art resource teacher.
Large Motor and Active Exploration – Children have an opportunity to develop large motor skills and safe play in the multi-purpose room and on the playground. They learn to appreciate nature and the outdoors through exploration on the playground, gardens and during Nature class.
